The intersection of mental health and Christian practices
As the Psalmist David said, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps 139:14) but at times we struggle with how complicated we can be. Mental health problems affect Christians and non-Christians and until recently a significant amount of stigma has been felt in the church around mental health problems, psychology, taking medication, and “admitting” one has a mental health problem. This talk will walk through Biblical documentation of common mental health symptoms and how the scriptures actually mesh well with mainline therapies for depression and anxiety. By understanding mental health more openly with less stigma we can demonstrate acceptance and come alongside and support our campers, staff, and volunteers, 20% of whom, statistics tell us, have a mental health problem.
