Description and Mission
Description
Camp Temiskaming is a Christian Camp associated with the Anglican church. It has recently been separately incorporated and is a registered charity with the CRA. Most of the staff are volunteers from Anglican churches in the area who have been screened by members of the Board of Directors to ensure the safety and security of our campers. Screening includes an interview with the camp director, a police record check, and verification with applicant-supplied referees.
A small camp compared to many in Ontario, we are limited to 24 campers not including counsellors and staff. Most of our staff is volunteer so that we can keep our costs low and make registration accessible to children of all economic backgrounds. In addition, we have a bursary fund to assist campers in need. All children are welcome, however they are expected to take part in all activities including the spiritual program provided.
While certain buildings are wheelchair accessible the camp is not yet equipped for campers with accessibility needs.
Mission Statement
To provide a fun camping experience that promotes the development of life skills and co-operative interactions with others while encouraging a personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Program Information & Activities Offered
We provide week long camps for children aged 8 to 13. Older teens are invited to take certain leadership roles as counselors. Some years family camps are offered. There is also an extended weekend camp for Women and another for Men. Each camp offers a variety of activities such as swimming, hiking, canoeing, archery, games, crafts, and campfires complete with a singsong from the camp songbook. Every morning there is chaplain’s chat which includes a Bible story, the week’s memory verse and often a craft or game related to the theme of the week.
The day begins and ends with a short prayer service and the raising or lowering of the Canadian flag.
Facility Information
Camp Temiskaming is located at A-1006 Twin Lakes Road, a few kilometers south of highway 65. Twin Lakes Road is ten kilometers west of Temiskaming Shores [New Liskeard] Ontario . Twelve acres of forested land bordering on small, spring-fed Fairy Lake provide our beautiful Northern Ontario setting. There are a limited number of cottages and few power boats on the lake.
The Camp was originally designed as a place for the families of those serving overseas during the Second World War to have a summer vacation. After the war it was briefly operated by Kiwanis before it came under the ownership of the Anglican Diocese of Algoma in the early ’50’s. The original 2 cabins and the dining hall still exist. Over the years four more cabins were added as well as a multi-purpose meeting hall with a large stone fireplace. It is here that many of the camp activities happen. Just over ten years ago a washroom block was built complete with toilets and showers and hot and cold water. A tool shed and waterfront equipment storage shed have also been added.
A drilled well and particulate and UV filtration system were installed a dozen years ago. Water purity is regularly monitored by a local environmental company.
